about

An original song based on the book “A Quiet Belief in Angels” by R J Ellory which can be found here: www.rjellory.com/books/english/quiet-belief-angels/

About a boy who navigates a life terrorised by a permeating evil that lies over his home town Augusta Falls.

lyrics

1
I grew up in Augusta falls where life passes like talk and time of day.
Where whispers of joy and grief don’t get much air
And I suppose I could have ended up the same.
But I knew my mother played down that white feather
Which found its way at my feet.
She said it came from some old pillow
She was full of good motherly deceit.
For on that day an angel came for work that would make this poor town sore.
It walked my father down that long dusty road and I never thought it’d come back for more.
2
Seems some daughters started getting lost but the soil didn’t want to play a part.
Seems the good book was always true because the blood cried them out from the earth.
But no name was heard from those foul ditches, those grown ups just stopped and stared.
I never saw the sherriff look so broke. It’s like he help the whole towns store of despair.
In Augusta Falls I thought an angel played games to make proud fathers sore.
It walked those children down that long dusty road and I could’ve sworn I’d seen that face before.
3
In Augusta Falls the harvest has been plentiful and cruel
No ground left fallow or unhurt.
People fell like rain from a cloud till this town laid down and gave away its heart.
I couldn’t see no catcher in the rye, no teacher left to tell me how to pray.
But I began to see through that white feather that was calling for the angel in me.
In Augusta Falls it was a demon that played games and Angel played before.
It had no place on that long dusty road but I could have sworn it got a taste for more.

4
Sometimes wonder what I must have thought to lead that tender army through the streets.
Sometimes wonder what we would have done if we’d found a demon to defeat.
This is the only hymn I learnt from the day my father left to old age.
Sometimes I wonder how it rings so true like a bell on the Lord’s day.
In Augusta Falls the Guardians walked a game the grown ups dared not play
And though I left that wretched town, like a stray dog that town it followed me.

5
Now I sit with another old man, both souls damned to the core.
Pistols pointed at each others sick hearts the answers aren’t important anymore.
I should have known back then how this trusted man held so much despair.
Whilst honest men poured their sweat into the soil, this monster gave it something more.
In Augusta Falls angels and demons look the same
But the preacher says they’re cut from the same mould.
But there are rules to this time honoured game on that long dusty road.
